How We Met
Jeff and Yang first met on July 19, 2013, when his friend Jacob organized a karaoke night. Jacob's roommate Kat invited Yang but wasn't able to make it herself, so it was just Yang and a bunch of MIT nerds. Yang doesn't remember Jeff from that night, but Jeff remembered her voice and managed to friend her on Facebook.
A while later, Jeff and Yang were both looking for housing in SF. They started getting to know each other as potential roomies but got distracted just chatting online. At some point, Jeff came over to play piano and they stayed at Live Sushi for hours until after it closed.
Yang invited Jeff to see Frozen on a Wednesday night and he said yes, despite his startup schedule and lack of Disney fandom. They began talking online a lot, often late into the night. Over Christmas, Jeff wrote a Frozen parody song for Yang called "Keeper Upper", passing her test with flying colors.
On January 4th, 2014, Jeff and Yang went on an epic “first” date. They took a long walk on Ocean Beach, debated philosophy on a tree in Sutro Heights, wandered around Golden Gate Park, rowed a boat at Stow Lake, ice skated at the Embarcadero rink, and watched Fearless. They had never taken so many Lyft rides in a single day.
This evolved into midnight walks in Potrero Hill, cooking yummy meals, and after 6 months, moving in together. Yang realized that Jeff was a bear and she was a cat. Together as BearCat, they changed jobs, moved apartments, traveled abroad, met each other’s families, and created their own dialect and worlds.
A few Christmases later, Jeff made a puzzle game for Yang with a secret final level: a bear holding a ring for a cat.
On January 4th, 2019, Jeff proposed in real life. He took Yang to the Japanese Tea Garden, in the same park as their first date five years ago. Jeff's sister Michelle and Yang's friend Roger hid in the bushes to capture the moment. He pulled out custom designed rings and got down on one knee...
She said yes!
